Packing Suggestions
Flashlight(s) - waterproof is nice, extra batteries for sure. If you’re planning to creep back from White Sound harbor after dark, you need a good light on the boat. Use it to keep from getting hit by another boat and to look for mooring balls. Leave a light on in the cottage so you can figure out where you are. It’s dark. And if the power is out and there’s no moon, it’s black.
Clothing - dry hat, water hat, swim shirt, slicker, two bathing suits, sun coverup, something for casual dinner out. You can dress up but no one requires it.
Footwear - boat friendly “dry” shoes and stay-on water shoes with enough sole to stop an urchin spine are essential. Plus a pair of nice sandals in case you are going dancing. :-)
Cooking Enhancements - spices or secret ingredients for a favorite recipe makes island cooking fun. Some basic spices are in the cabinet for your use and there’s lots of spices available in the settlement grocery stores.
Over the Counter Medications / Sunscreens/Bug Repellant - supplies are limited on the island. If you have a preferred or essential product, pack enough for your trip. We try to leave some partial bottles behind for the next visitors but don’t count on it.
Gear - Binoculars, camera, sunglasses w/ keeper, swim fins, mask and snorkel, comfortable life jacket for anyone not super confident in the water and all littles. Bring a pocket-sized flashlight for each person. A dry bag for phone, wallet, flashlight and such is handy.
Lost Items - Not a day goes by where someone doesn’t report finding or losing a phone, snorkel gear, keys, wallet, or shoes on the paths and roads of GTC. Things fall off the carts and out of pockets all the time. So bring gear bags with clip straps to loop around the cart roof stanchions. every. single. time.
Useful Guides - Abaco Cruising Guide, birds, fish, star chart - the stars are outstanding in the Abacos and apps are helpful and fun. We have cottage copies of guides but you will enjoy having your own.
Travel Tips
For general information about experiencing the Abacos, try this Visitor’s Guide to the Abacos, for great info re: boating we recommend Abaco Cruising Guide, there are copies for your use on the shelf.
Island Property Management has lots of useful information on their website including a list of all the airlines that fly into Abaco
Abaco Sun is a good resource as well
Determine if you will want to rent a golf cart or small boat. If yes, check on availability before you start fixing your dates. Carts and boats are sometimes in short supply.
We love having a cart, which we rent from D&P and park behind the Green Turtle Club. We enjoy taking the cart to the ocean beach, to New Plymouth, and it’s fun to explore up and down the island. If you aren’t cruising, you are going to want to rent a small boat to keep at the cottage dock.
